VW sends me a packet telling me they will buy my TDI sportwagen back for 18 grand and the same day I get a flyer from my VW dealer where I bought it explaining that they “need my 2011 Sportwagen TDI” for their inventory (which they can’t even sell) and they are willing to offer “top dollar” “up to 125% KBB value!” for it, and include a fake check for “Up to $8567!*”

*depending on miles, condition, and equipment.

I realize that these are automated and all, but I sincerely hope no one sees this and thinks “yup, now is the time to trade my TDI in” and gets pennies for it. I would also sincerely hope that my dealer would be human enough to turn such a sap away with correct information.

I’ve received a key blank in the mail from a dealer, stating that if the key fits the ignition, you win the car.

Yes, a key blank.

I know it's just dealer marketing, but I wish they'd check registration records with this stuff. I too got one in the mail yesterday, with the local Subaru dealer wanting to buy my Crosstrek for up to 2 grand above book value. The same Crosstrek I got rid of in February 15.

Did you ever decide on a replacement for the nox box?

I'm kinda regretting trading my '12 Passat TDI last year. Sorta. Are they still sending out checks to TDI owners for lost value? Because I prob would've taken the money, let them bring the car into compliance and just paid off the note.

I remember the day I got junk mail from a dealer wanting my ‘05 Malibu Maxx, and claiming it could be worth almost $9K.

I knew it was bullhonkery, but I kept feeling something in my subconscious prodding me to see what they’d give.

That’s a fun one...along with the “bring this form to the dealership...you could have already one $10K!” mailers. It’s always from a dealership I wouldn’t take a gift car from.

We get these too, the key is usually made from some kind of cheese that has the appearance of metal too. “Oh, this could be the one! if only it was strong enough to resist a single start”

I usually take them up on their offers though, its usually $20gift cards or movie tickets and I like those things. When they ask what brought me in? free stuff. when they ask what I would be interested in seeing today? Jaguar x-type wagon in green...low miles.

Years and years ago, Kia was giving away Sonics tickets. I hit up three different dealers.

Would it be feasible to get the deal of a lifetime on a petrol powered Sportwagen? Or are you ready to move on?

We are still looking at sportwagens, we like ours, but deals? HA! The dealer we went to had one on the lot and its because it was a diesel he couldn’t sell. If we want one we’ll get what they can get in and like it.

I get letters asking to buy vehicles I no longer own. Sometimes they come from the dealer I traded them in to.

A US VW dealer has got to make coin somehow...so getting a few punters to trade their TDI for eight grand and then they sell it back to VW for eighteen grand is quite ‘sensible’. Morally questionable, sure! But sensible...especially if you can think like a car dealer.
